It was this rocky escarpment that led General Charles Gordon of the British Empire to believe this was
the "Place of a Skull" (Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, John 19:17) where Jesus was crucified. As
a result of his discovery in 1883 this location is known as "Gordon's Calvary".
